Join our Global Graduate Programme!

What's in it for you?

The Global Graduate Programme is our 18 months international development programme that combines a real job with structured development through an on-going focus on learning and training.

From day one, you get responsibility and your own projects. This allows you to develop your career. At every stage of the process, your career is supported by on-going feedback and coaching. It will give you a chance to make an impact on our business and, ultimately, set you up for a successful career.

You will join one of our Northwestern European teams and through three rotations, including an international one, you will discover how our various departments work. You will gain fantastic insights into the business: Our factory operations, the products we sell, the markets we operate in, the organisations we compete with, and, most important of all, our customers.

Marketing & Sales

Global horizons. Iconic brands. Intense competition. Complex regulatory challenges. It all adds up to one of the world’s most exhilarating marketing challenges.

In the span of two years, you will learn trade marketing fundamentals from a field-based commercial role. You will then experience roles covering brand positioning, brand authorship, consumer dialogue, account classification, strategy planning, and market tracking. This will prepare you for one of the following areas:

Brand Marketing - See how brand positioning and authorship fit into the wider creative process as you help develop our campaigns. You will get to work closely with our agencies. From brief and campaign execution to follow-up brand activities.

Trade Marketing & Distribution - Learn how to work with retail and wholesale customers, market to shoppers, and optimise our routes to market.

Strategy Planning & Insights - Understand the research tools and insights behind our decisions. Learn about the competitor analysis that informs our market knowledge. Discover the planning processes that keep our brand activities on track.

Next Generation Products - Learn how we are developing products with potentially reduced-risks to address the public health impact of smoking. Work with scientists and regulators. Advocate a regulatory approach that puts consumer safety and product quality first. Encourage the growth of new, potentially reduced-risk products.

Finance

Far-reaching. Influential. Strategic. That is our Finance area. As finance managers, we do not just set budgets and report results. We are decision makers and business partners. We operate at the heart of a multi-million-pound global business, and advise on the allocation of resources for brand investment. We work with different functions to evaluate and improve returns, and manage the delivery of consistent profit growth.

First, you will build commercial experience on one of our end market. Then you will have plenty of opportunities to develop your financial knowledge. This could be in Corporate Finance, Corporate Tax, Treasury, Audit, Mergers & Acquisitions or one of our regional finance shared service centres.

Operations

We have factories around the world making nearly 700 billion cigarettes a year. Not to mention plants making roll-your-own tobacco and oral tobacco products such as snus and moist snuff. The scale of our Operations is huge. Its takes innovative thinking and the latest technology to deliver the best results for our consumers and our business.

You will build on your experience from the commercial challenge. You will learn about the range of our Operations and experience life at the sharp end of one of our business areas:

Leaf (buying tobacco from farmers)

Plan (balancing supply and demand)

Logistics (managing supply chain flow and strategy)

Product Innovation (working with Marketing & Sales as well as Research & Development to introduce new products)

Make (manufacturing)

Procurement (focusing on innovation, smart spending, and quality partnerships)

Service (understanding consumer needs to put them at the heart of Operations or supporting our transformation in Global Business Services)

Human Resources

We have 55,000 talented people to look after, and thousands more to attract. As global HR teams, we need to be incredibly progressive. We offer world-class expertise and support across Global Talent Acquisition, Leadership Development, Talent Management, Organisational Effectiveness, Reward, and Industrial Relations.

You can look forward to a busy year. It takes in a commercial challenge, which gives you insights into what a large proportion of our workforce does. You will also get to grips with the strategic nature of HR. Meanwhile you enjoy management training to develop your commercial awareness and leadership skills. Afterwards you will be ready to move into any one of these HR areas: Generalist, Attraction & Recruitment, Performance & Learning or Organisational Effectiveness.

Your Development

At British American Tobacco, we believe in independence: It is down to you to take the initiative when it comes to your career. 70% of your learning and development will be on the job. 20% will be through coaches, mentors, and colleagues. The final 10% will be formal training at BAT Academy. At BAT Academy, you will meet fellow graduates and senior colleagues from across the globe in the heart of the English countryside and at international trainings.

Your Impact

You will have an impactful start and a busy year ahead. You will have a real commercial job from day one and prove that you can deliver results at the frontline of our business.

It is core to our business that we meet our customers’ needs. This is why it is so important that you learn what this part of the business is about, and prove you understand the challenges and opportunities of the people who work in these roles. The specific role will vary depending on the functional area you join. Still, whatever position you are in, you will gain a vast amount of practical, hands-on experience.

Though you will be new to the business, the first few months will be more than just a learning exercise.
