Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers. Our researchers and engineers pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.
Over the past few years Microsoft, and other enterprise companies, have increasingly hired freelancers, via online labor platforms like Upwork, to help with their every day business operations. This internship will address fundamental research questions in the freelance economy such as:
  • How do we quantitatively measure the benefits to Microsoft employees from hiring freelancers
  • How much do Microsoft employees benefit, if at all, from hiring freelancers
  • ow does this benefit change with experience?

We would like to measure these benefits quantitatively but there is room for qualitative data, such as a diary study, to compliment our measurements.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
This internship will involve the intern collaborating both with a member of Microsoft Research and a product team. First, the intern will help flesh out the research design to quantitatively measure how much benefit Microsoft employees get from hiring freelancers. Then, the intern will execute the research design and analyze the data that it yields. The output will be insights the product team can use as well as an academic paper.
