PhD position "Elucidating the role of adipose tissue in diabetes" bei KU Leuven

Project

A PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Mitsugu Shimobayashi at the Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism, KU Leuven. The group is part of the Clinical and Experimental Endocrinology (CEE) division. The group is committed to address the fundamental biological and clinically relevant question “how do nutrients impact cells and organisms?” In particular, in the last few years, the group is studying the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity-induced insulin resistance and thereby type 2diabetes. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate who will characterize molecular changes in mouse and human adipose tissue by state-of-art omics technologies such as (phospho)proteomics and metabolomics. The aim of this project is to identify a key signaling pathway linking to the pathogenesis of obesity-induced insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Profile

  • The candidate must have/be expected to have a master’s degree in the field of biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and experience with proteomics and/or metabolomics technologies and bioinformatic analyses are a strong plus.
  • The candidate should have excellent communication skills in spoken and written English.
  • The candidate is capable of working independently but also cooperatively in a team.

Offer

  • The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art infrastructures and possibilities to collaborate with other scientists and clinicians.
  • The candidate is embedded in an international team.
  • The candidate is encouraged to apply for fellowships during his/her stay in the lab although the host laboratory can cover a salary for 2 years with possible extension.
