Aalborg University (AAU) is a Danish university offering an innovative range of study and research programmes. The university is located mainly in Aalborg, Denmark, with campuses in Aalborg, Esbjerg and Copenhagen. It offers 76 bachelor programmes and 112 graduate programmes. As AAU is highly acknowledged for its international scope, several of the educations are conducted in English.

The university is divided into five faculties:

Since its establishment in 1974, AAU has been characterised by a problem-based and project-oriented teaching method (PBL) – also called the Aalborg Model, and by extensive collaboration with the surrounding society.

Over the past 40 years, AAU has developed from being recognized locally to becoming a leading actor in the broader international community. Though being a youngster, it is already ranking amongst the best and most acknowledged international universities in the world.

In recent years AAU has risen up the international lists of university rankings. AAU appears on the great majority of ranking lists, and is among the top two percent of the world’s 17.000 universities. According to Times Higher Education, AAU is placed as number 194 in the overall world university ranking and number 25 in the Top 100 Universities established within the past 50 years.

According to Shanghai/ARWU World Rank, Aalborg University is no. 201-300, and no. 7 in the world within the field of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. According to the 2018 MIT report, Aalborg University is considered to have the best engineering programme in Europe - a programme that takes fourth place in the world.

A brief history of AAU

AAU was first established in 1974. With only 40 years of history, AAU is a young university. Since the first years the number of students have increased from 3.000 to the present 20.211. In 1995 AAU began its expansion by opening a department in Esbjerg - merging with Esbjerg Engineering College. In 2003 AAU opened a department in Copenhagen. In 2010 the School of Medicine was created.
