The master thesis will be performed within a research project called CIRCit which aims to increase articulation of the Nordic Industry towards Circular Economy, enhance energy and material efficiency, increase competitiveness of the Nordic Industry in the short, medium and long-terms and enable the collaboration between partners from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland from universities, research centres, innovation clusters and industry confederations. BackgroundA transition to circular economy provides opportunities to deliver high quality and resource-effective offerings and enhanced competitiveness, while also requiring broad adoption of a new mindset and cross-sectorial collaboration along value chains. To systematically support Circular Economy, the CIRCit project will develop tools and procedures that will cover all the necessary factors for a successful transition to circular economy. The tools and guidelines will be developed based on leading-edge research and in close collaboration with industry.
One of the main enablers of circular economy is the consideration of circularity aspects in the early-stages of product design and development. This would support products and services for increased circularity potential including recycling, reuse, repair, remanufacture, repurpose, rethink etc. This is the research area of Work Package 3 in CIRCit Project and the master thesis will be performed within this WP. The aim is to find tools and methods in literature that could to be used during the product development process enabling circularity. In addition, the project aims to develop a tool that considers circularity aspects within the early product development process.
ProblemThere are several circularity aspects that need to be considered when designing a product or service. How can these aspects be integrated into the product development process? What tools already exist to facilitate this? There might be some trade-offs between circularity, quality and cost, among others, where do we draw the line and how do we manage those trade-offs? How do we visualize circularity aspects in an easy way to help designer considering them? The main deliveries are
- What tools and methods exist that could to be used during the product development process enabling circularity? A literature review approach!
- Using the literature review, develop a tool to consider circularity aspects to ease understanding of trade-offs and being able to manage them using visualizations. Collaborative approach with industry.
