This master thesis is offered at RISE Measurement Technology within the scope of a research project called NPAD, which aims to enable distribution of cm-level Network-RTK GNSS for a large number of automated vehicles or other mobile platforms.
RISE Measurement Technology in Borås has an interest in systematically investigating the positioning quality of mobile phones. Positioning with GNSS, such as GPS or Galileo, has become increasingly popular. This is in large part due to modern smartphones integrating competent receivers and that many applications can use the positioning service for their own purposes. The positioning accuracy is however affected by several error sources. While many of them can be mitigated, the receiver system and the antenna are crucial to the quality of the positioning solution. Techniques like RTK and PPP offer improved performance and are in the future expected to be used in mobile phones. As these techniques utilize the carrier phase and usually assume antenna systems of geodetic quality the performance and limitation of the antennas in mobile phones needs to be investigated.
The project focuses on mobile phones with the Android OS, which offers raw data from their GNSS receivers. Static measurements are the main subject of interest, but depending on the outcome, kinematic scenarios can also be investigated. The applicant needs to understand the potential local errors sources and plan the setup and the experiments accordingly. Data shall be collected and analyzed in order to categorize the antennas of a number of typical devices. Comparison with other receiver systems, such as low cost GNSS receivers of higher quality and reference geodetic instruments, will establish a performance baseline.
Are you interested in app development? If so, this can be included as a part of the project. Examples could be high-performance geocaching or an application supporting land surveying. The scope of the project is suitable for 1-2 students.
The problems that needs to be considered are:
  • Where is the reference phase center of the GNSS antenna?
  • What impact does the device orientation have on performance?
  • What is the performance difference between a smartphone antenna and other antennas in different environments?
  • Do different smartphones differ significantly in performance?
  • How can the positioning uncertainty be described?

Your background could be in Technical Physics, Electrical Engineering, Space Technology or Computer Science. Basic knowledge of GNSS and statistics are necessary. Knowledge about RTK is desirable but can also be gained as a part of a literary study.
