Master Thesis: Development of a CFD boundary condition to simulate a perforated surface en Saab AB

Your role


For some applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis special boundary conditions are needed. One such application is suction of boundary layers; simulation of a pressure loss for e.g. a heat exchanger or for injection of fluid as a film for cooling purposes. By development of such boundary condition the versatility of the CFD software will increase.

The trend of CFD indicates more complex simulations where several systems are involved in the same model. Typically there is a need for evaluation of structural temperatures in an air flow simulation, such systems may also include perforated surfaces for e.g. cooling purposes. Another example is evaluation of heat exchanger performance for a condenser in a vapour cycle machine integrated in an analysis of the external air flow for an air vehicle. Implementation of a boundary condition that describes the physics of a perforated surface enables such simulations.

Description of the master thesis

This master thesis will focus on the integration of a boundary condition for suction of fluid though a surface. The applicable CFD software will be Saab’s flow solver M-EDGE. The work will include implementation and development of a number of algebraic models for suction of fluid through a perforated surface as well as assessment of the models on generic test cases in order to give industrial best practice guidelines.

Your profile

The Master Thesis is suitable for one student with interests in aeronautical engineering. You are in the final stage of your master’s education (or similar) and are about to start your 30 hp master thesis work. We are looking for you who are interested in solving technical problems in exciting aeronautical systems and who are a team player enjoying collaboration within the team as well as with external contacts. It is preferable that you are familiar within fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, CFD and programing.

This position requires that you will be approved in a security screening in accordance with the Swedish Protective Security Act.

Aeronautics is responsible for the development, production, marketing, sales and support of the Gripen aircraft. The Propulsion team at Aeronautics is responsible for the integration of the engines in our aircraft, military and civil. Integration of the engines includes the responsibility to have the engines modified for the aircraft as well as having the aircraft with all the systems developed to operate with the engine.
