For Bioengineering Technology TC, Department M2S, Technology Campus Ghent we are looking for a highly motivated colleague to do a PhD in cellular signalling of yeast while serial beer fermentation using state-of-the-art proteomics and phospho-proteomics workflows. At the research group Enzyme, Fermentation and Brewing Technology of the Department Microbial and Molecular Systems, prof. Florian Weiland is establishing a new research line at the edge of proteomics driven molecular biology and brewing sciences. The research focus is on cellular signal transduction driven by protein kinases and the changes in these signalling pathways during beer fermentation, with the main objective being the influence of these biochemical pathways on the final product quality. The research group is hosted at KU Leuven Technology Campus Gent.
The here advertised project offers the opportunity to characterize the proteome and the phospho-proteome of bottom-fermenting brewing yeast during and across serial fermentations. During these fermentation cycles, yeast encounters a variety of stress sources. These encompass increase in alcohol concentration, decrease in pH, changes in osmotic pressure, oxidative stress, stress through increase in CO2 concentration and nutritional starvation towards the end of fermentation. Further, a defect in flocculation behaviour is encountered after several re-pitching cycles. The underlying cellular signalling events for this defect remain unknown as well as the influence of the various stress sources on this defect. The project aims to identify the signalling pathways involved in the defective flocculation behaviour under industrial relevant conditions and under consideration of the various stress sources during fermentation.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and communicative PhD candidate with a Master's degree with a background in biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering or equivalent. The candidate should have a strong interest in scientific research within the field of proteomics, molecular biology and beer production.
The candidate is expected to:
Have excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Present research findings at national and international meetings and conferences
Publish research findings in highly recognized international journals
Assist in teaching activities and supervise master theses.
We offer a full time PhD position for 9 months. After positive evaluation, the position will be extended for a total duration of 4years. The position is available immediately and will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
