What is the Millennial generation?
Millennial is a term used to describe individuals born between 1981 and 1997. It was allegedly coined by the 2 US authors William Strauss and Neil Howe, who published several books on social generations in the 1990’s.
The word “Millennials” is often meant to describe certain generalised traits and characteristics of people who have reached adulthood in the early 2000’s. There are also some overlaps with the term “Digital Natives” (and, additionally, some confusion about how to distinguish the two).
What Millennials mean for your recruitment
As the birth cohorts dubbed “the Millennials” are entering the workforce, there are some common stereotypes and reinterpretations circulating around the label - just watch the video of US author Simon Sinek’s below for a sum up. (All the while it’s worth remembering that complaining about young people ruining everything goes back all the way to the Roman Empire).
The common traits associated with the Millennial generation are either spun in a positive or negative context (e.g. self-confidence vs. narcissism; multitasking vs. scattered attention) with a multitude of recommendations for recruiters and HR managers. At the same time, various critics point out that the research evidence for all those claims is often flimsy at best.
For your recruitment strategy it, therefore, makes good sense to assess what you need to tweak for your campus recruitment rather than blindly following each new generational term on the market.
A point worth noting from many articles: Millennials may actually be quite similar to older generations (Gen X, Baby Boomers) in their wishes towards an employer. (Who would NOT like a quick and unambiguous answer to their job application?) The difference is that they actually have technology at their disposal which can grant these wishes.
So, you might be in doubt if it makes sense to change a recruitment process for a Millennials sake - still, making the change might turn things around for everyone in the company.
