Master thesis: Development and mechanical characterization of bio-reinforced composite hos FineCell

Environmental concerns have recently generated considerable interest in the development of composite materials based on renewable resources such as wood fiber as an alternative for fossil-based materials. Within the development of wood-based materials, cellulose has been identified as raw material from which high performing composites can be elaborated because of the enhanced mechanical, thermal, and recycling properties. Cellulose, with an annual production estimated to be over 7.5 x 10 10 tons, is the most abundant biomass resource in the word. For this, FineCell is producing micro-cellulose powder and work on the development of greener and thermoformable composite with cellulose nano-reinforcement.

FineCell’s technology is based on several years of top research performed at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, which is a global leader in research of polymers and materials from renewable resources. FineCell’s technology is patented in Sweden, with patents pending across global geographies. Our products are enabling development of sustainable material at affordable price and competitive performance - on large scale.

As part of our product development and optimization, we are looking for students to perform their master thesis in mechanical characterization of composite. In this project, micro-cellulose is proposed as matrix or filler for plastic in order to reduce the petroleum content without affecting the performance of the end products. Your main objective will be to characterize cellulose nano-reinforced HDPE and PP composites with the aim to decrease the amount of plastic, improve the mechanical properties and retain the same thermoforming capacity as the virgin HDPE and PP. You will work jointly with the division of Engineering materials at Linköping University and the FineCell team in Linköping.

Your main tasks:

  • Preparation of composite specimens for characterization.
  • Mechanical characterization of composites based on HDPE and PP, for example tensile modulus, tensile deformation, flexural (modulus and deformation) and Charpy impact (notched and unnotched).
  • Interpretation of obtained results and suggestions to improve the composite.
  • Technological watch on the development and characterization of HDPE and PP composite.
  • Participate in improving the composites properties.

  • You are student from an engineering program where you have taken courses in materials science where you have studied the coupling between mechanical properties and microstructure.
  • You have good analytical skills; you are curious, and you want to work in a dynamic startup
  • Initiative, pragmatism, and rationality are part of your DNA
